Toshiba Tecra Z40t-B1420W10 Review – Bulky But a Strong Performer

The Toshiba Tecra Z40t-B1420W10 boasts a fifth-generation Core i7 processors, long battery life, and good graphics performance, all in a 14-inch package. The display offers a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution LED-backlit TFT screen. It also has a large hard drive to boot. However, the laptop is a bit bulky but not as durable as the likes of some of its competitors such as the Dell Latitude 14 7000 Series (E7450).

Toshiba Tecra Z40t-B1420W10 Review - Bulky But a Strong Performer

The Toshiba Tecra Z40t-B1420W10 is a Strong Contender But Falls Short in Some Areas

Weighing at 3.24-pounds, the Toshiba Tecra Z40t-B1420W10 is relatively thick with its 13.3. x 9.3 x 0.8-inch dimensions. This laptop is in the ultraportable class but there are others that have more compact bodies, such as the HP Elitebook Folio 1020. The base and the lid are both covered in a smooth, silver-colored finish. This can feel slippery so it can be quite hard to hold the laptop with just one hand.

Also, when comparing the display resolution to other 14-inch screen laptops, the performance is quite lower. Other similarly priced laptops, like the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Touch, have a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution for its display. However, Toshiba’s contender is made for the business end of the market. As such, spreadsheets and Powerpoint presentations look pretty sharp on its screen. Also, the 10-point touch display boasts incredible performance as it is very responsive.

Under the hood, the Tecra Z40t-B1420W10 comes with a 2.6GHz Intel Core i7 5600CPU and 8GB of RAM. Benchmarking tests made this laptop by Toshiba a winner against its competitors especially against the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch. However, it does fall short, but only slightly, to the HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1.

Graphics performance does not actually quite beat the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch, but this means that the Z40t-B1420W10 is not playable. As far as gaming scores go for a business laptop, it still holds a pretty decent performance on its own. You can even play Witcher 3 during your downtime with medium settings.

When gaming performance is okay, battery life is excellent. The Z40t-B1420W10 can last over 10 hours of continuous use which easily beats out the competition. This means you can do reports, type documents, and create a whole list of business-related tasks for a good number of hours before the battery dies out.

For those who want a long-lasting and fast computer with above average display, the Toshiba Tecra Z40t-B1420W10 should be your choice. While the exterior is not as durable, it does offer good multimedia performance and a slew of other great features to make productivity, and even gaming, worthwhile.
