Roomba 980 Review – iRobot’s Best and Possibly Its Most Expensive Vacuum

The Roomba 980 is a product of a 13-year technology for automated vacuum cleaners. Now, iRobot has made a vacuum cleaner that is smarter than ever before. So much so that it is calling the 980 the most important Roomba vacuum cleaner ever since the product line debuted back in 2002. The device has a camera and advanced localization technology. This will allow the device to “see” obstacles within the room and accurately map out the floor areas. Furthermore, and for the first time ever for the Roomba line, it can now be connected wirelessly with its dedicated mobile app. If only the price to get this amazing vacuum cleaner was put in a lower price range then many would find this more appealing than it already is.

Roomba 980 Review - iRobot's Best and Possibly Its Most Expensive Vacuum

The Roomba 980 is iRobot’s Current Best But It’s Too Expensive for Most People

If you have seen the previous design of earlier Roombas, then you would not immediately see the difference with the new Roomba 980. The design still has that same circular, low-profile look that the iRobot is still refining over the years. However, when you look a bit closer, you will notice a small camera is built on its top.

On the bottom of the Roomba 980 vacuum cleaner, you will find two “AeroForce” extractors which can also be found on the Roomba 880. These two elements will assist in cleaning your floors without the need for the traditional brush. Furthermore, the device also has that same large trash bin with removable HEPA filters. However, one interesting difference for the 980 model is that it feels significantly heavier than its predecessors. This is mainly due to the hardware inside of it.

So what are the hardware found in the 980? First of all, this is the first Roomba vacuum cleaner that utilizes its :visual simultaneous localization and mapping” technology (or vSLAM for short). This was previously seen in more expensive offerings (yes, even more expensive than the 980). The technology uses a combination of the camera found on its top and the floor sensors on its bottom. Using a combination of these two features, the device will be able to locate visual landmarks and will opt to avoid them whilst cleaning your floors. This is the centerpiece of the iRobot’s new iAdapt 2.0 navigation solution, which helps the 980 move around seamlessly while avoiding obstacles.

With a built-in camera, location sensors, the wireless connectivity with its mobile app, and the ability to clean better than other Roombas make the Roomba 980 a must-buy. The problem is that even though it is a great companion to bring inside the house, you still have to deal with that premium price tag.
