Overwatch – “Alive” Animated Short Released

Overwatch is a cross between a first-person shooter (FPS) and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), and recently they have been releasing short video clips to go with the hype. Alive is the second short film that focuses on Widowmaker, although Tracer makes for a good amount of screen time as well.

Overwatch “Alive” Short Film Focuses on Widowmaker

The Overwatch short animated film entitled “Alive” is actually the second video clip for the game. The first one focused on Winston, the Gorilla/scientist, and it was entitled “Recall.” This time around, the focus is on Widowmaker and what’s it like behind the sniper rifle that she wields.

Before reading any further, do be warned that there are spoilers ahead. The clip starts out with a narration from Widowmaker herself. She says, “When I was a girl, I had a fear of spiders. I was told they felt no emotion, that their hearts never beat. But I know the truth.” While giving her narration, it was seen that Widowmaker was knocking out security. Cut to a scene with a crown and what looks like a Mahatma-Gandhi-esque robot that wishes human and machine-kind to be at peace with each other.

Unfortunately, Widowmaker has other plans as she tries to disrupt the peace. Fortunately, Tracer was there on the scene and what follows is an exciting chase filled with explosions, shooting, and even time travelling (which is the Overwatch character‘s signature ability).

Before Tracer can deliver the final blow by throwing her signature bomb to Widowmaker, the sniper shoots at the explosive before it reaches her. The explosion knocks Tracer off of the roof where they were fighting and Widowmaker follows shortly. Widowmaker readies her rifle and snipes at Tracer but the fast-talking, pistol-wielding immediately high-tails it out of the situation before Widowmaker’s bullet reaches her.

However, Widowmaker was aiming for someone else and successfully kills her initial target. The machine falls and Widowmaker calls the “party to be over.” The devastated Tracer tries to question the sniper as to what her purpose was in doing this. While making her escape, Widowmaker breaks Tracer’s time-travelling equipment.

The Overwatch clip ends by Widowmaker’s narration that was heard from the start, but with a slight addition. She adds, “at the moment of the kill, they (spiders) are never more alive.” The open beta starts on May 4th, 2016, and it would seem Blizzard is revving up the hype by releasing these short clips.
