Cougar 550M Gaming Mouse Review – Falls Short on One Aspect

Published: 3 February 2016Updated: 14 February 2016

While there are many gaming mice that plan to stand out against the crowd with their overly futuristic looks, the Cougar 550M Gaming Mouse presents itself with a rather simplistic design. It also has a grippy thumb rest, and it comes with dozens of software customizations. Perhaps the most notable element is not with its simplistic design, or its nice array of customizations, but with its price point. This particular gaming mouse is found in a price class that is more reasonable than higher-end models. However, not everything about this gaming peripheral is a cause for joy as the dpi button is found in a rather awkward spot.

The Cougar 550M Gaming Mouse is Almost a Winner

The dots-per-inch (dpi) button on the Cougar 550M Gaming Mouse is found right beneath the scroll wheel. Therefore, whenever you reach for it, it will jerk the cursor. This can be a fatal move especially in a tight gaming match. For instance, if you’re sniping an enemy and you hit the dpi button, it will jerk the crosshair and can make you lose your target.

It comes into the market with dimensions of 1.8 x 2.7 x 5.3-inches, and it has a weight of 4.2-ounces. With these numbers, it does make the Cougar 550M small and lightweight. However, even with its more compact size and lighter weight, it is built to last. It is made with a glossy finish found above its blue and orange panels. It also comes with rubberized grips on either side of the device. For comparison’s sake, the 300M had a smooth, matte finish on its sides.

This particular mouse has the standard right and left-click setup. There is also a clickable scroll wheel found between the buttons. The company claims that the right and left click buttons are able to withstand about five million clicks. Right beneath the scroll wheel is that horrendously placed dpi-switching button.

On the left side of the mouse, just right above the rubberized grip, there are two programmable buttons. Directly in front of those are three LED lights to indicate which dpi mode you’re using.

Gaming with the use of the 550M presents a more than decent experience. There are no exhibits of lag, and does promote an overall good experience. However, if you’re playing games that would require you to switch dpi constantly, then you may have trouble with this one.

Even though it does not have the high-end features and specs found in Razer gaming mice, the Cougar 550M Gaming Mouse is still a great option as it is placed in a lower price point. The placement of the dpi button, however, makes it hard to recommend.
