The Acer Aspire Switch 12 S is a Windows 10 convertible device which has high goals of beating the already acclaimed Microsoft Surface Pro 4. It may seem that it is already aware of the very stiff competition as the company pre-loaded the device with an array of high-end components. These include Intel’s top-of-the-line RealSense 3D camera. Looking at what is to offer on paper, it may be one of the more interesting convertible’s floating around CES 2016.
The Acer Aspire Switch 12 S Hopes to Push the Surface Pro 4 Out of its Throne
Since the device is a convertible, the Acer Aspire Switch 12 S is a hybrid unit which means that it can split into its tablet and keyboard sections. Both parts of the set are built from a sturdy aluminum material. The device is portable enough as it features a relatively modest 12.5-inch for its dimensions, and has a thickness of a miniscule 7.85-millimeters.
With the device, Acer has managed to place a good number of ports into it. When the keyboard and tablet sections are connected, it will offer USB 3.0, Thunderbolt 3, microSD, and micro-HDMI ports. This means that it should meet most users’ needs when it comes to connectivity.
Its magnetic locking mechanism is perhaps one of the best you can see to-date. Its connector feels sturdier than most convertibles that are already out in today’s market, and even that of the Surface Pro 4. Unlike the locking system found on the Dell XPS 12, the Aspire Switch 12 S Hybrid can be used to set the screen in more angles than one. Therefore, you no longer have to strain your neck looking on the display when you use the unit on your lap.
Its display brings in 4K resolution into the mix. Screen color representation seems to be pretty good. Colors look balanced and the whites are among the cleanest you can see in a touch capacitive display. The black representations are handsomely inky and the screen does offer a great level of maximum brightness.
Perhaps the only issue that you can see for its display is that the Gorilla Glass screen coating was prone to acquiring stray light. But to be fair to Acer, it is a problem that can be noticed in a lot of laptop screens from different manufacturers.
Other parts of the Acer Aspire Switch 12 S look incredibly well on paper and it does show signs of being the best Windows 10 convertible to be released on the market. It features a top-notch resolution display, a solidly thin look, and Intel’s RealSense Camera all boasting with potential. So can it beat the Surface Pro 4? As of the moment, it’s still too early to say.
