If you’re in the market for a typical looking speaker, well, you’re not going to get anything ordinary with the Devialet Phantom. It’s design is nothing like any speaker you may have encountered, ever. Most importantly, it doesn’t even sound like any other speaker you might ever heard. But this is not exactly a bad thing. In fact, its uniqueness is its strongest selling point. However, all of this uniqueness comes down to an insanely hefty price tag.
The Devialet Phantom is Not Your Ordinary Speaker
To start, the cabinet of the Devialet Phantom is a single-cabinet model that isn’t particularly new. However, it is a radical departure from the norm. It has external skin fabricated from a thick case of ABS plastic. This casing surrounds an inner skin of glass-fiber polycarbonate. In turn, this casing is wrapped around an aluminum core.
Because of this premium casing and exterior feel, you can play the speaker at any volume you want and you will never feel the cabinet vibrate or even hear it resonate. Each of the four drivers within the device is completely isolated from the enclosure.
The Devialet Phantom Speaker System is a three-way system that consists of two eight-inch woofers, a “ring” midrange transducer, and a one-inch tweeter. The woofers are mounted on either side of the cabinet with the use of a push-push configuration. This is to all the sound signatures to cancel out each other’s vibration.
There are motorized domes over the woofers which displace the air to reproduce extremely low frequencies. Hence, tracks feel especially punchy with bass signatures being very apparent. Visually speaking, these look a bit strange since they pulsate in and out to the beat of the music track that’s currently playing. Still, the company states that the motors enable the device to deliver a bass response that is all the way down to 16Hz.
It can connect to Bluetooth compatible devices that supports the A2DP and AVRCP profiles, as well as the AptX, AAC, and SBC audio codecs. The device also has a TOSlink fiber-optic connector, and it also supports the following audio formats: AAC (up to 320Kb per second), HE-AAC(V1), WMA, WMA lossless (16-bit only), MP3 (up to 320Kbps), Apple Lossless, WAV, FLAC, and many others.
The Devialet Phantom is able to produce amazing bass response, and its single tweeter and midrage frequencies do a fine job as well. It sounds great with any type of music but it’s definitely not for everyone considering you have to shell out a lot of cash to purchase it.
