It’s time to say goodbye to Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment. Instead, you can all say hello to Sony Interactive Entertainment. The new company will have its headquarters in San Mateo, California, and it will soon have offices within London and in Tokyo. This is all in accordance to a statement made by Sony.
Sony Computer Entertainment Just Left the Building and in Comes Sony Interactive Entertainment
The reason for the move pertaining Sony Computer Entertainment to change their name is quite simple – they’re going to make a big push on their popular home gaming console, the PlayStation. It feels as if the organizational move is necessary towards the end. This change was announced first back in January of this year but it just came into effect this April.
The point merger states that they want to create a company that was stronger and has clearer goals to give more boost towards the PlayStation brand. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) will then continue the work on “expanding PlayStation under engagement,” as the statement has noted. SIE will still keep SCE’s diamond shape logo, however the offices have already migrated under the new name.
They have also made some major structural changes as of late. Just recently, they have announced the creation of a subsidiary that will have its focus more on mobile games, specifically targeting the Asia market. These mobile games center around popular PlayStation titles to allow gamers have the chance to bring the experience of their favorite games on the road.
Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Group Executive in charge of Network Entertainment of Sony Corporation, has the following to say about the new organization: “By integrating the strengths of PlayStation’s hardware, software, content and network operations, SIE will become an even stronger entity, with a clear objective to further accelerate the growth of the PlayStation business. Along with our business partners, SIE will develop pioneering services and products that will continue to inspire consumers’ imaginations and lead the market. We will work hard to maximize corporate value by coordinating global business operations across San Mateo, Tokyo, and London by leveraging local expertise.”
With the advent of new PlayStation devices, such as the PlayStation VR and the rumored PlayStation 4K, Sony Computer Entertainment (now Sony Interactive Entertainment) will have their hands full in making the PlayStation brand a more powerful one.
