PC Specialist Octane Review – The Power of a Desktop in a Laptop

The PC Specialist Octane comes from a company who is better known at creating gaming desktops rather than portable machines. As such, the Octane comes into the market with a desktop processor and a high-end GPU. This gaming laptop then serves its purpose in providing videogames with impressive framerates.

PC Specialist Octane Review - The Power of a Desktop in a Laptop

The PC Specialist Octane is a Gaming Laptop With the Power of a Desktop Computer

Once you take a look at the PC Specialist Octane, you might immediately take in a sense of familiarity. This is because the laptop is made with a casing that is manufactured by Taiwanese notebook manufacturer, Clevo. The model for the shell used on the Octane is the P751DM, which is the 15.6-inch variant of the 17.3-inch base that has been used by the XMG U706.

Clevo has been known to make pretty sturdy shells for their computers, and that notion can still be seen on the PC Specialist Octane Gaming Laptop. The machine comes with a good number of USB 3.0 ports, one USB 3.1 Type-C connector, four audio jacks, and an eSATA socket. There is also a chunky power socket found at its rear that is sandwiched between two DisplayPort connectors and an HDMI port.

This kind of versatility goes on towards the machine’s interiors. There are two base panels which can be peeled away to reveal the interior components. One of the base panels will allow access to the memory, the cooling gear, and the M.2 SSD. The other panel hides the hard disk, and the spare M.2 and 2.5 connectors.

In terms of looks, the Octane is not the slickest nor most modern-looking laptop you can find on the market. There is no brand logo that can be found on its matte-black lid, which is good news for the minimalist type. The power button will light up with a green color when the unit is turned on, and the keyboard is backed with blue lights.

As stated earlier, this portable gaming machine is powered with a desktop processor and GPU. It has the Core i7-6700 processor and it is the most modest form of Intel’s Skylake i7 architecture. Nonetheless, it does provide supreme processing power for a laptop. When it comes to the graphics, it is powered by the GTX 980M. This is the most popular Nvidia mobile chip at the moment, and to no surprise since it is top-of-the-line silicon.

There are some areas within the PC Specialist Octane that do provide average performance for a gaming laptop (such as 16GB of RAM). However, the device handles games like that of a full-fledged gaming desktop. If you can shell out the cash to purchase this machine, then you are in for a really great treat.
