Panasonic HC-VXF990EBK Review – Adding in Some Neat Features Into the Mix

The Panasonic HC-VXF990EBK enters the already diminishing consumer camcorder market, but it still aims to change the views of many as it brings in some snazzy functionalities into the mix. While it hasn’t strayed away too much from its predecessor as it is still based around a 1/2.3-inch back-side illuminated CMOS with 18.9-megapixels, and still images can be captured up to 25.9-megapixels, it does bring in a host of advanced features.

The Panasonic HC-VXF990EBK Tries to Win Back the Crowd

Continuing with what’s similar to its predecessor, the Panasonic HC-VXF990EBK has a maximum of 4K video resolution but now it is made into a more cinema-friendly 24fps mode instead of the company’s previous models that can only dish out 30fps and 72Mbits/sec.

The HC-VXF990EBK also comes with Full HD resolution video capture in either MP4 and AVCHD formats, wherein the former is available up to 50Mbits/sec and the latter up to 28Mbits/sec in 50p mode.

To separate itself from the crowd, the Panasonic HC-VXF990EBK camcorder brings in an array of advanced shooting features. Many of these reside in an additional section in its menu labeled as Effects. There is the Slow and Quick Video effect which puts a button on-screen. Pressing said button will switch between high and slow-speed recording. Other than these recording speeds, there’s still the regular slow-motion option if that is more of your cup of tea.

Apart from the additional recording speeds, the camcorder also has an automated slow-zoom function. When recording videos, it can be quite difficult to achieve a consistent slow zoom manually. With this feature, it will create a dolly-zoom effect wherein the camera will zoom in or out when the unit moves away or towards the subject. The effect in question here is that the subject will stay in place while the background will appear to move.

Unfortunately, one feature that hasn’t returned in this model is the lens ring. There is a wheel next to the lens that can perform the same function, however it does not provide much of the same level as the intuitive control in which earlier models had. Nonetheless, the camcorder still has mini-jacks for an external microphone to be connected.

With the addition of the new features, the Panasonic HC-VXF990EBK places itself in the running to be one of the most capable consumer camcorders in the market. This makes it the premium camcorder of choice at its price class.
