The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 is not your ordinary tablet as it is a compact device that aims to let users add on new functionalities with the aid of add-on modules. This is makes it the most flexible and most versatile prosumer-focused model to-date.
The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 is a Modular Slate
Modules for the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 are add-on attachments which will connect to the unit’s bottom edge. As of the moment, there are only three on offer which are an add-on battery pack, a 3D imaging module, and a Presenter module.
Both the Presenter and the 3D Imaging module seems to hold the most promise out of the current three. The former is adding a pico projector and HDMI port to the mix of its already standard features, and the latter is a rear-facing Intel RealSense camera.
Using the projector is similar to that of the company’s own Yoga Tab 3 Pro Android Tablet. Like the name for its module, it allows users to beam project presentations onto a surface, or perhaps a video playing on the tablet if that’s what you want to share.
Adding more to the device’s flexibility, the Thinkpad X1 also features a removable rear panel. This is used for upgrades and serviceability. This is not a feature that can be found in many modern-day mobile tablets since other slates have a sealed rear-side. This makes the tablet a “unique” contender and clearly separates it from other competing devices, namely the iPad Pro and the Microsoft Surface Pro 4.
Its creativity is even backed up with impressive specs and some more add-on options. First off, the tablet will feature stylus support and it is also readily compatible with Lenovo’s Thinkpad keyboard (sold separately). Therefore, you can use the slate as a fully-functional laptop, or as a digital sketchpad.
The tablet has a native 2,160 x 1,440 display resolution which ensures that images look constantly sharp. There is no evidence of backlight bleeding which is a very nice touch, especially when you know that this is an issue which has plagued many Lenovo products. Black representations are decent, but not the deepest. Whites are fairly clean as well.
For everything that it currently is, the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 is in the running for the most flexible and versatile mobile device to-date. This is all thanks to its modular focus. It has a competitive price tag which does make a lot of people excited for its actual release.
