After just 4 months after Kia had built the 1 millionth Cee’d, the car company had just gave the vehicle a redesign and an update with the Kia Cee’d 1.6 CRDi. The CRDi is the 2nd generation of the Cee’d line but has an updated look, newer engines, and contains a fresh 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. Looking at what’s written on paper, this 4-cylinder vehicle sees a CO2 emission to have dropped down to 10g/km. The fuel economy for the manual transmission model jumps to a very impressive 78.5mpg. While these do look promising for the 2nd generation model of the Cee’d, the biggest gains, however, can be found on the automatic model as the 7-speed dual clutch wins over the old 6-speed torque converted by about 25 percent.
The Kia Cee’d 1.6 CRDi is a Facelift From Its Predecessor Done Right
The automatic model for the Kia Cee’d 1.6 CRDi has a lowered CO2 emission down to 109kg/m (from the old 145kg/m). Furthermore, the fuel economy for this variant is seen to boast up to 67.3mpg (from 51.4mpg).
The engine for the 2nd generation Kia Cee’d 1.6 is more powerful as well. Its great performance is felt in just about any situation. When accelerating from 0 to 60mph, it will only take about 10.2 seconds as compared to the 11.3 second sprint with the 1st generation model. The 40Nm bump in torque to 300Nm guarantees that the car feels faster in gear.
While the car does seem like it’s still not as refined as its European competitors, but cruising with this vehicle made by the Korean car manufacturer is a nice experience. Planting the foot at highway speeds and the car will surge forward. This lets drivers overtake while in slower moving traffic in an easier fashion.
While these are all well and good, the new Cee’d really shines when looking at its gearbox. It feels smooth and very swift to react, especially when talking about the top end. It is able to shift from 6th to 7th gear without a notice. There’s also a pair of paddles mounted onto the steering wheel so drivers will be able to have some fun if they find themselves on a twisting back road. However, these paddles do set off a “cheap” feel. The new Kia Cee’d 1.6 CRDi is a worthy addition to the Cee’d line and it feels very welcoming with better fuel economy and a decent drop in terms of CO2 emissions.
