Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket Review – Does it Deserve to be the Best Game Capture Device?

The Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket has already made a name for itself and it already became one of the industry standards in recording games. Right from the onset, you can see why; it will offer PC-free recording as the captured footage goes straight to a USB thumb drive or an external hard disk. This feature is rarely seen in game capture devices, even those found in the higher-end markets.

Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket Review – Does it Deserve to be the Best Game Capture Device?

The Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket Offers PC-Free Game Recording

The design of the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket has been made with portability in mind. It is a small box weighing in at only 340-grams, along with a bunch of wires connected to it. For its exterior looks, well, it does leave something that is much to be desired.

In other words, this is not your coolest-looking device that you may want to easily boast to your friends. It is made out of a matte-black plastic casing which can easily scratch. The unit also comes with bright red buttons that stick out like sore thumbs. Overall, this design choice makes the product look cheap.

Nonetheless, there is a plus side to this overly simplistic design choice. With just a slight glance from across the room, you will immediately know that the device is up and running. Pressing the big red button on this box will make a red LED light band to glow around its compact body. Simply wait for the light to turn green and you’re ready to record.

A nice touch for the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket device is that it voice-overs and commentaries can be recorded and mixed from the device itself. This is great for players who like to give commentaries to their playthroughs to share across social media portals.

When it comes to the actual recordings, videos look really good as it easily hits Full HD 1080p resolution with ease. However, not all about its video capturing capabilities are good. Footage is always locked at 300fps. Therefore, if you’re playing games with a gaming rig that can let games easily hit 60fps, it won’t show in your recordings.

Still, spend some time with the Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket and you will see why it comes off as an industry standard. Its compact nature makes it extremely easy to carry and set up practically anywhere. You can also record as much gameplay as you can, provided the connected storage device can handle it. Of course, the fact that you cannot  record 60fps videos is a shame, but image quality is great nonetheless.
