D-Link DIR-890L AC3200 Ultra Wi-Fi Router Review – That’s Not a Large Metal Bug

When you first chance upon the D-Link DIR-890L AC3200 Ultra Wi-Fi Router, you might immediately think that this device could not possible give you wireless connection capabilities; and yet, it can, and it does it well. The design looks like a large metal insect with all its antennae sticking out, or perhaps an alien-lifeform if that’s more of your cup of tea when looking at it. Nonetheless, this is the company’s flagship consumer router. It has six external aerials to give speeds of up to AC3200 standards. The speeds are 2 x 1,300Mbps and a 600Mbps connection that run simultaneously across three Wi-Fi bands. It is a monster device in looks, performance, and in price.

The D-Link DIR-890L AC3200 Ultra Wi-Fi Router Provides Great Wi-Fi Performance Despite Having Overkill Looks

Router designs have really flown the coop as of late, and the D-Link DIR-890L AC3200 Ultra Wi-Fi Router shows this notion well. Its design looks to be more of a 50-50 split in terms of popularity. There are some that may like the otherworldly design, and there are those that do not find it to their liking. However, there are many ways to love about the DIR-890L than its “unique” looks.

It is finished in a bright, glossy red with a striking angular shape. Once it is installed, you will hardly take notice of it; well, almost. It will still stand out in a room like a sore thumb. Even though there are some who would not like the outlandish shape, it won’t come as a bother in time when they get to experience its excellent Wi-Fi capabilities.

The D-Link DIR-890L proves to pass with flying colors in terms of giving rock-solid throughput. It supplies consistent wireless connections and is highly reliable with day-to-day use. However, with regards to speeds, the router is found to be less impressive on this account. It did largely deliver the kind of speeds that are expected of a high-end router, but it could not match those who are deemed the best in this category when compared to other routers.

Thankfully, however, the recorded speeds are consistent and are still perfect for daily tasks. Also, when it comes to file-transfer speeds to connected USB devices, the router does exceedingly well. It hits the 35.5MB/sec write and 65.2MB/sec read marks.

The D-Link DIR-890L AC3200 Ultra Wi-Fi Router is able to provide fast, far-ranging, and consistently reliable Wi-Fi connections. However, it is still far to be considered one of the best in its class.
