The company could not have been any more obvious when naming the Asus Zenfone Selfie. The phone’s title does well to advertise the model feature. There is a 13-megapixel shooter at the front, and it is at an aperture of f/2.2 which means you can get pretty good depth of field with each taken selfie. The front-facing camera has a dual-tone flash that further emphasizes the device’s priorities. Also, this is a bit of an exclusive feature. This is because you would be hard-pressed to find a dual-tone flash located at the front of a handset in today’s market.
Is the Asus Zenfone Selfie a One-Hit Wonder?
If you think that the Asus Zenfone Selfie will only be famous overnight, think again. It can take on a lot of its midrange competitors and it’s not just about its front-facing camera that we’re talking about here. There are a lot of great things that can be said and seen within the Selfie. For instance, it has the same Snapdragon 615 chipset as those that are within the majority of its mid-range price, even those located from other handset manufacturers. There is up to 3GB of RAM and a 5.5-inch Full HD display.
The Zenfone Selfie has dimensions of 156.5 by 77.2 by 10.8-millimeters. This is 4-millimeters taller than the already bulky Zenfone 2. The minor change in dimensions was obviously made to handle the large front-facing camera. Selfie enthusiasts will be okay with that tradeoff.
The Selfie shares that same aesthetics as with other Zenfone phones. In fact, the look of the Selfie is largely based on that of the Zenfone 2. It is made entirely out of plastic, which has the good and bad about it. Furthermore, even though the plastic cover does not have a glossy finish, you would think that the handset is not a fingerprint magnet, but it is.
But the main event for using the Selfie will be, of course, taking selfies with it. It’s front-facing 13-megapixel snapper does quite well. The problem with the front-camera is that it does not have the laser-autofocus feature that its rear-camera has. However, there is that wonderful dual-tone LED flash at the front so your pictures of yourself do not have colors that are blown-out.
In the end, the Asus Zenfone Selfie feels like a close cousin to the Zenfone 2, but with a larger and better front-camera. Interested customers can choose either to get a handset for practical use, or to record their everyday life with their face on it then share it to social media platforms.
