Asus S1 Mobile LED Projector Review – A Nice Touch

The Asus S1 is a pretty mobile LED projector that boasts a long battery life. It also has the ability to charge other mobile devices attached to it because of its large battery cell. While its resolution and brightness levels are low, even for a palm-sized projector, its specs are of the more typical kind found in smaller pico (a.k.a. pocket) projectors. Video and data-image quality are quite decent as well.

The Asus S1 Mobile LED Projector is a Decent Little Package

Built around a DLP Pico chip, the Asus S1 has a brightness rating of 200-lumens. It has a native WXGA resolution, or 854 x 480 pixels. This resolution has a bear 16:9 aspect ratio. Its LED light source claims to last up to 30,000 hours. This is the effective lifetime of just about any modern-day projector.

In a design perspective, the Asus S1 Mobile LED projector is indeed a handsome device. It is a square unit with rounded corners. It is encased in aluminum with etched concentric-circles. On its top are cut-out buttons which are used to control volume, settings, and accessing a data source.

For its dimensions, it measures in at 1.3 x 4.3 x 4-inches, and the unit weighs 0.8-pounds. Its weight does go to 1.1-pounds when you add in the power adapter. Still, you may not need to bring the power adapter with you all the time since the S1 projector has a built-in rechargeable battery which can project videos and images for up to 3-hours. While beaming images, it can also act as a portable power bank to charge mobile devices through its USB micro-B port. The package also comes with a soft carrying case which lets the projector fit in snuggly. However, the case can only fit in the projector itself and not with the adapter.

Video quality is what you would expect from a low-brightness DLP projector. Still, it is quite suitable for showing short video clips as part of a presentation. There is still the issue of rainbow artifacts appearing which is also a common issue with DLP-based projectors. Color reproduction is somewhat on the pale side and details in blacks get lost sometimes. This may be due to the projectors low-brightness settings.

Overall, the Asus S1 is a handsome, highly portable, and reasonably priced mobile LED projector. It has the capability of acting as another power source to charge mobile devices with. Its brightness and resolution are quite on the low side, still it is typical on what you would see in the average mobile projector nowadays.
