If you’ve been following news about graphics cards for a while, then you might be expecting the AMD Radeon R9 380X for some time now. Recently, there has been a huge gap in AMD’s range since the release of the R9 390 and 380. It would make sense that the company would build a new graphics card to fit in between these two.
The AMD Radeon R9 380X Fills in the Gap
Even though it was given a new name, the AMD Radeon R9 380X is based off on existing hardware from the same company. This is still the case with many of the current-generation AMD cards. Fury-branded products are the only ones that have a new core built into them.
It has a revised version of the Tonga core. The R9 380X’s core is now called Antigua. But this is not the unusual part to it. What’s strange is that AMD has unleashed the full power of this chip for the very first time. It has a full gamut of 2,048 stream processors that are split into 32 compute units. These are set up from every previous Tonga-based part. All of which had 1,792 stream processors in 28 units.
At its core, the AMD Radeon R9 380X Graphics Card is clocked in at 970MHz and it is combined with 4GB of GDDR5 memory which runs at 5,700MHz. When you know your graphics card numbers, looking at these on paper would not be an impressive sight. The standard R9 380 will be able to run its core and memory at exactly the same speeds.
However, the R9 380X is not just about the numbers as it leaves the performance up to board partners. Therefors, this will mean that most of the versions of the card will have a core overclock once it leaves the factory.
Seeing the specs of the R9 380X, it is a main competitor of the Nvidia GTX 960. However, Nvidia’s contender is found at a cheaper price range as compared to AMD’s offering.
When it comes to performance, there is no denying that the R9 380X is an adept performer. It can deliver both 1080p and 1440p resolutions. It is even able to manage through great graphics with games at resolutions of 2,460 x 1,440.
While the AMD Radeon R9 380X does offer more than satisfactory performance, there are cheaper alternatives out there that can offer similar, or even better graphics performance. It does, however, fill in the missing gap that was left behind by the R9 390 and the R9 380.
