When you first hear about D&D Lords of Waterdeep, you may think that this is yet another attempt to bring the tabletop RPG into a more modern setup. You may even be intimated as to thinking how can a board so massive with an overly complex gaming system be able to fit inside a mobile device? Thankfully, this iPad game is nothing like what you’re thinking right now. It is deceptively really simple, despite its history of intricate gameplay. It even requires no knowledge about the lore of Dungeons and Dragons.
You Can Be a Complete Newbie and Still Understand D&D Lords of Waterdeep
Even if you’re not a fan of the Dungeons & Dragons universe, but just have a liking for fantasy games, then you will still enjoy D&D Lords of Waterdeep. In this game, you and your opponent will take turns in placing Agents around the city of Waterdeep. When you do this, it will earn you money, different colored cubes to represent your warriors, rogues, clerics, and wizards, or give you special Intrigue cards in the process. You will use these resource in order to complete quests and buy even more buildings. This will then earn you more victory points. It is a game about managing all your resources better and before your opponents do.
Lords of Waterdeep is not a free game and can be downloaded on your iPad for a price in the App Store. It is compatible with all current iPod Touch, iPad , and iPhone models.
As for its visuals, it is surprisingly good on the iPad and even on the scaled down screen of the iPhone. Despite the many elements found in the game, it is still easy to play on either screen size. Still, it is clear that it is not particularly optimized for the iPhone.
Overall playstyle of the original game is not lost in the iOS version. The artwork is beautifully recreated and you can also pinch and zoom to your heart’s content. The developer of the game even added some subtle flourishes of animation to the board’s map. There are crawling clouds and soaring griffins that are all drawn in beautiful, medieval style.
Even if you know nothing about Dungeons & Dragons, you will find D&D Lords of Waterdeep really fun; you may even find yourself lost in the game as you play for hours. It is really fun to play and has a short learning curve. It also has enough depth to keep everything fresh and entertaining, even for long hours of play.
