Plustek SmartOffice PS506U Review – Sacrificing Speed for Quality

What is the Plustek SmartOffice PS506U?It is a document scanner that has a utility which is easy to use, and offers enough to get the job done well. It has a 100-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), which enables you to scan relatively large stacks of paper. It recognizes text pretty well, and it includes features for the convenience of users such as ultrasonic multi-feed detection to immediately catch double feeds. It can also scan long pages of as large as 8.5 x 200-inches. This is definitely a workhorse scanner for a small workgroup or office, but it is not the speediest unit in the bunch.

Plustek SmartOffice PS506U Review - Sacrificing Speed for Quality

The Plustek SmartOffice PS506U May be Slow, But it Performs Greatly in Other Aspects

When it comes to design, the Plustek SmartOffice PS506U offers nothing new in this regard. It follows a common look for desktop scanners everywhere. The input tray is found at the top rear, and the output tray is found at the bottom front. There is a front panel which slopes backwards from bottom to top.

The device weighs only 5-pounds and 15-ounces, and comes with measurements of 9 x 12.6 x 9.1-inches for its height, width, and depth. With these numbers, it is light enough to be transferred without hassle from room-to-room, and small enough to be placed on a desk with other office equipment.

This particular unit comes with Abbyy FineReader Sprint 9.0 for optical character recognition (OCR). It also comes with Presto PageManager 9.37 for document management. Additionally, these discs will come with Twain, ISIS, and WIA drivers which, together, will let you scan from just about any program that has the scan command.

Just like many document scanners, the PS506U has an optical resolution of 600-pixels per inch (ppi). This is more than what you need for most purposes. You can even set the settings for scanning to PDF format with 300ppi and in color mode.

Scanning speeds clock in at 30-pages per minute (ppm) for simplex scans, and 58-images per minute (ipm) for duplex scans. In contrast, there are a lot of scanners that can perform better in terms of speed. However, when it comes to performance and quality of scanning, then it excels in these aspects.

There are many document scanners that perform better than the Plustek SmartOffice PS506U, but that does not mean that this particular device performs badly. In terms of quality of scanning, it can very well outdo the competition as its accuracy is top notch.
