OnePlus X Onyx Review – A Gem of a Smartphone

If looks are what you want for a budget smartphone, then you would want to get the OnePlus X Onyx. It is one of the best handsets that you can purchase right now when looks are one of your determining factors when purchasing a smartphone. However, if you want a more top-of-the-line performance, then there are other offerings in the market within a similar price range, such as the Asus Zenfone 2.

The OnePlus X Onyx Looks Really Good at the Right Price

Since the OnePlus X Onyx has the looks, it begs the question, can looks triumph over performance in the market? This is probably the first phone to take on that question, head-on. The device is a glass bar that has metal built on its sides. The tapering that comes at its corners will add to the look of the device. The glass also gives it that premium feel. However, herein lies the first problem – it will be prone to breaking. Putting a cover over the phone can resolve this issue, but it may ruin all of the device’s aesthetics.

The X Onyx is also a fingerprint magnet, but not as much as other phones. Even if you do away with this caveat, the phone feels really good overall. Holding the combination of metal and glass really does feel like it is a premium phone, even if it’s not.

The handset weighs 138-grams and is 6.9-millimeters thick. It is the type of phone that can turn heads when you’re out in public. The size of the phone is just right as it stands at the 5.5-inch mark. It is only 0.1-inch taller than that of the iPhone 6s. This makes the device a compact smartphone which is easy to maneuver and to hold. This is a feature that you cannot find easily even in today’s modern smartphone market.

In terms of performance, and with regular usage, this smartphone does very well. Overall, the feel of the device makes you forgive the lag and shutters that become apparent during heavy use. Speaking of lags and shutters, these are most likely caused by the Oxygen OS’s instability than the older SoC. The phone has a Snapdragon 801 chip which is better than the Snapdragon 615 that the Moto X Play has. Still, when looking for the best performer in this price range, the Asus Zenfone 2 still ranks at the top.

Getting the OnePlus X Onyx is a matter of choice. If you want a phone that can turn heads while you’re out in public, then this is it. It has a fair range of performance and features to go with its awesome looks. But when it comes to optimal performance, there are others that can take on this phone with minimal problem, like the Asus Zenfone 2.
