Netgear Arlo - A Wireless Security Camera that Anybody Can Handle

Setting up a networked digital camera based safety and monitoring system in your house can be complex, discouraging experience. So Netgear built Arlo – a smart, simple system that ditches the cables. By “Arlo”, Netgear means an entire system of base station and as much as 15 smart cameras. Everything is battery operated and totally wireless. The digital cameras appears like something from a 1970s SF movie and have actually just a single button to sync. Each unit is completely waterproof and it has onboard motion-detection and night vision. Range is 90 meters, and now we had no difficulty with reception in a normal home. Each camera operates on four CR123 batteries, which Netgear claims last about six months.

Mounting the cameras is dead easy. Along with a tripod screw mount, each device has a powerful magnet on the near. You don’t have to install it to metal either – they include a mounting pad. This causes it to be an easy task to move the camera or swap batteries. Slap a camera into place, plug the base station into the router and run the application on your phone, or log in via a web page. That’s it. You can activate specific digital cameras to record video or take images, or just allow them choose when you should activate via motion sensing. The 720p movie quality is quite good, and the app is excellent and allows you to completely control the digital cameras, schedule sleep and wake times, tweak motion activation, or download recorded videos. The biggest drawback is the fact that the cameras don’t record audio. Therefore while they are great for protection and monitoring, or even maintaining an eye on your animals, they don’t work as, say, a baby monitor. The system automatically stores recordings for seven days online, but longer backup requires a monthly fee. Arlo will be $349 for a base place plus one digital camera, $589 for two digital cameras, and $799 for three cameras. You could obtain the cameras individually for $249 each.
