Master & Dynamic MH40 Review - Retro Design Meets Superb Build Quality

The Master & Dynamic MH40 Presents a Wide Soundstage With a Booming Bass

At first glance, you would immediately know that the Master & Dynamic MH40 are a pair of beautifully crafted headphones. It has a very good combination of polished metal and a matte finish. There is a neat stitching on the leather with photo-etched logos. Everything with regards to the materials used for the headphone is made with style in mind.

Even the detachable cables give out a sense of luxury on them. They are a silver-colored braid with knurled plugs and are beautifully etched. Quite unusually, the headphone comes with a 3.5-millimeter jack socket found on each earcup. However, this may be for the purpose of the cable to be attached in any way a user prefers. It provides a neat touch, and the right earcup has a mute button which can instantly be pressed to immediately silence the headphones.

The size of the earcups found on the MH40 are a bit bigger than its rivals, especially when comparing it to the Sennheiser Momentum. This means that you don’t feel as much comfort as what you would expect from smaller models. But they do have the ability to be twisted which meant positioning on the head becomes better.

Its size comes with a monstrous weight. It has a weight of 360-grams, which means that even though there is some amount of comfort in them, they tend to be overshadowed by the fact that the headphone weighs on your head.

In terms of sound performance, there is a very wide soundstage coming off from the headphone. It feels like the music is coming from further away. It presents a very powerful bass signature, which audiophiles who love the low-end signatures of the audio spectrum will come to know and love. However, there are times when the bass becomes too powerful that it drowns out some frequencies, especially in the mid-range.

Overall, if you’re the type that would like a good bass profile for a pair of over-ear headphones, then perhaps you might want to check out the Master & Dynamic MH40. While it does look really good with an excellent build quality, it is still hard to recommend because of its sheer weight.
