The Godox LED Ring48 light from godox is a ring light designed especially for macro. Unlike a ring flash which fires a short but bright flash, the Ring48 has a few LEDs which emit a consistent source of light with a color temperature between 5500-6500k. The LEDs sit most of the way across the lens for soft, also lighting. Although the Godox LED Ring48 has a functional distance of between 3cm and 1m, its constant brightness makes it unsuitable for portraits. It is nonetheless a good selection for macro and it has controls for all the full 48 LEDs, only the 24 on the left or the 24 on the proper via a switch. The Ring48 comes with 49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58mm 62mm and 67mmmetal adapters. These screw into the lens’ filter thread and the light slips over the top for quick attachment and removal.
The housing spins freely on the adapter. This was a tad annoying as we’d to hold it constantly in place to prevent this from happening. That said, it did allow us to fine-tune the lighting when using one side of the Light-emitting Diode array. A cable runs through the light to a power device which can be attached to a camera’s hot shoe. This device is quite big with dimensions of 44x90x44mm and takes two AA batteries. Alternatively it can be plugged into the mains aided by the provided adapter if you intend to shoot indoors for very long periods. It may also be removed your DSLR completely to use it off – camera. There’s a 1/4in thread in the base too, for mounting it on a tripod.
