The Cyber Gadget Retro Freak is an Android-based gaming console that replicates various vintage systems with the aid of emulation. It allows you to play your old game cartridges that are just stowed away somewhere inside your basement. It does offer modern-day advantages such as screen filters, upscaling to 720p HD, the ability to dump ROMs onto a microSD card, and a save state feature.
Play Your Old Game Cartridges With the Cyber Gadget Retro Freak
Within the package of the Cyber Gadget Retro Freak, there are two main parts: the console itself and the cartridge adapter. Oh, and it has its own controller. This unit can play cartridges from SNES/Super Famicom, Mega Drive/Genesis, Famicom, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and even PC Engine games. There are adapters that will even allow you to run Master System and old NES games.
When it comes to design, well, let’s just say that it won’t win any awards. It has an industrial design as it looks just like a relatively plain block of plastic. This block has been outfitted with cartridge slots for the array of gaming systems it supports.
At the top of the device are the slots for the SNES/Super Famicom, Famicom, and Genesis/Mega Drive cartridges. At the front, there’s the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16, and the Game Boy slots. There are also three USB ports which you will plug in the controllers and other USB accessories.
Like the Hyperkin Retron S, the Retro Freak uses Android for its operating system. It presents a range of options when you turn on the console. You can even tinker with the various screen filters to calibrate the image that you want. It is even possible to install cheats or configure the controllers’ buttons to your liking.
It runs a cheap, but usable Rockhip 3066 “system on a chip.” Standard emulation is pretty excellent with games running at normal, full speed without any issues. However, it can be stated that no emulation is perfect as the only way to get the best performance out of your old games is to play them on their original hardware they are designed to be compatible with. Some games, especially for the NES and Mega Drive, would have their sounds slightly off from the original. But unless you are a seasoned veteran of these games, then you would hardly notice them at all.
The Cyber Gadget Retro Freak is a retro gamer’s dream come true. With gaming consoles constantly aiming for the future, it is nice to look back once in a while to look at how far games have come through the years.
