Asus ROG GL552VW Review – An ROG Machine at a Reasonable Price Point

Even though the Asus ROG GL552VW bears the Republic of Gamers brand, it is made to cost less than other gaming machines within the same category. Additionally, Asus is pitching this game to those with creative minds as well as to gamers. This comes to no surprise considering it does pack some considerable power within.

The Asus ROG GL552VW Has Solid Gaming Performance

Like many machines found in the Republic of Gamers brand, the Asus ROG GL552VW creates good balance between gaming and smarts. To start, the lid is made with dark, mottled plastic. Still on the lid, it has a brushed metal center-panel which is home to the ROG and Asus logos.

Looking at its interior, it is all made out of black metal. Inside, the ROG logo, keyboard backlighting, trackpad, and letters are lined with red. There is an area above the keyboard which is decorated with a lined with a pattern in which the company states has been inspired by Mayan designs.

When it comes to design, the GL552VW certainly sports a good look. To complement the company’s design choice for this gaming machine, it comes with an impressive array of connectivity options. At the left side of the laptop, you can find two USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI output, and a USB 3.1 Type-C port. To its right, there’s the USB and audio connectivity, as well as a DVD drive. There is a panel at the base of the device that can pop off to access the SSD, memory, and hard disk. It should also be noted that there is one memory slot that is vacant. The battery for the device is also removable.

While it does have its fair share of design plus points, its biggest issues lies with its size and weight. It is a few hundred grams heavier than its rivals and is also a bit thicker. Either issue is not a deal-breaker, but it does make you consider other options if you want a laptop that you can bring around without the extra heft.

In gaming performance, this particular laptop does excel. When playing games such as BioShock Infinite, it can rattle through the highest settings and it can still get a decent fps rating. For more graphically intensive games, high settings can cause games to drop to 30 fps, but turn the settings down low by a bit will recover those lost gaming performances.

Even though the Asus ROG GL552VW is indeed an excellent gaming performer, it does fall short in some areas. For instance, it has a rather sluggish SSD, poor screen quality (even though you can play at 1080p resolution with virtually no problem), and the keyboard could be better.
