It was promised before that Hulu will be diving into the realms of virtual reality and now that promise has now been made with the help of the Samsung Gear VR. The streaming service recently announced the launch of an app that will go with the virtual reality headset of the South Korean tech giant. The app is now available for download at the Gear VR Oculus Store.

In addition to Hulu providing their 2D content library to be viewed in a “360-degree” environment, the app also introduces exclusive original content that go along with other virtual reality films. When talking about virtual reality, you wouldn’t think about watching 2D content with a VR headset. However, the app will let users watch 2D content in a fully immersive viewing environments.
Using the Hulu App, users are able to choose among a variety of scenes when watching their favorite movies or shows. These include a living room, a large-screen movie theater, or you can even watch them while from a beach (so to speak). For each of the 360-degree environment, these settings will let viewers make their very own adjustments to the “outside” scene. These include lighting, to how the environment looks and feels. In other words, should you choose to watch in a theater setting, it would feel like you already own your very own private home theater (which you already are except its inside a virtual reality realm).
At the launch of the app, the streaming service says that there are over 25 pieces of virtual reality content that are available within the application. These include content from Baobab Studios, Las Vegas, RYOT, SilVR Thread, Studio Transcendent, Viacom, Discovery Communications, The National Geographic Channel, Showtime Networks, Spoke, and The Uprising Creative.
One of the more notable content that can be found within the app is entitled “The Big One,” which is the streaming service’s first-ever originally produced virtual reality film. The Big One was developed with partnership from Lionsgate Films, and it features Freddie Wong and his team from RokectJump. What the film shows is that users are able to watch a meteor shower that will “soon turn into an apocalyptic nightmare.”
At the time of writing, the Hulu app only works with the Samsung Gear VR and not with other virtual reality headsets. This particular VR headset works with the Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge, and the Galaxy Note 5 phones.
