2016 Audi TT – Virtual Cockpit is a Sight to Behold and an Absolute Joy to Use

For the 2016 Audi TT, it has what you can call a Virtual Cockpit. Instead of having the traditional center console screen for entertainment and navigation or the gauge cluster, the automaker has moved the TT’s screen right behind the steering wheel. It is a 12.3-inch-wide LCD panel which displays that vehicle’s infotainment and the car’s readings/ It has a resolution of 1,440 x 540-pixels and it is pretty sharp.

The 2016 Audi TT Has a Virtual Cockpit, Much to the Joy of Drivers Everywhere

The virtual cockpit found in the 2016 Audi TT is run by a quad-core Tegra 3 Series processor which has been made by Nvidia. It is able to generate 60-frames-per-second (fps) and can handle, as well as perform, 8-billion calculations-per-second. However, much can be said about the center console as it is bare, but it is a pleasing thought that it is as such. The climate controls are found to be hidden inside the center of the three large air vents found on the dash.

This Virtual Cockpit in the 2016 Audi TT has two viewing modes – infotainment view and classic view. For the latter viewing mode, it presents a more traditional two gauge setup. It is complete with a tachometer on the left and a speedometer found on the right. There is a small window which lies in between the two meters to show a good variety of information. The data found in said window include audio settings, maps, or the trip computers.

For the infotainment view on the Virtual Cockpit, it will shrink the instrument dials and then shifts the focus of the unit to certain information such as maps for navigation. With a simple press of a button found on the steering wheel, the gauges will move down and get tinier while the map will become larger. Said map will grow large enough that it will take up the entire width of the screen.

As for the center console, there is a large knob and some surrounding buttons for interaction with the infotainment system. Said knob is a four-position joystick with a scroll wheel included. Its surface is made to be akin to that of a touchpad as you can pinch and zoom with it. This touchpad can also be used for scrolling around the map. It can even deal with handwriting recognition.

While the 2016 Audi TT is clearly a technologically advanced vehicle as what many cars of today are boasting about, getting behind the wheel, and especially behind the Virtual Cockpit display, is something to be giddy about.
