The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x is the successor to the ATH-M50, and it is a pair of large over-ear headphones. These are clearly designed for professionals, in terms of design anyway. While not more expensive than its predecessor, there are some nice add-ons to the packaging. For instance, you get interchangeable cables, along with the already great sound that made the original model so popular.
The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Delivers Powerful Bass for its Large Size
At first glance, you would immediately notice the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x not by its design, but by its size. It is a pair of large over-the-ear headphones and are even generally bigger than other on-ears you can find at its price class.
While there are many headphones on the market that try to look sleek and modern, the ATH-M50x is mostly, and unashamedly, made of plastic. There is a little ring of metal that is inlaid into the earcups, and the headband is reinforced with a band of steel. Audio-Technica may be going for a more subtle, premium look rather than an overbearing fashion attempt that may otherwise go south.
Taking its plasticky design into account, it is still placed much in the right direction. Even though the vast majority of the device is large, the earcups do not stick out much from the side of your head, and neither does the unit’s headband.
The one major difference of this model is the inclusion of the removable cable. Even though the socket is the usual 2.5-millimeter port, it has a twist-and-lock mechanism to secure it properly in place. As such, you won’t be able to use any other 2.5-millimeter cable .
When it comes to audio performance, the pair is made to appease a wide range of audiences. It offers powerful bass, which virtually every pair of headphones try to achieve these days. However, the bass is not too powerful as to cast out other parts of the spectrum into the void. The low-end beefiness is produced with great control so details are still felt, or rather heard properly. This makes music listening a fun experience. It does bring extra power and a good amount of depth. Hence, it’s not only great for listening to music, but it’s also good for gaming and movies as well.
With the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, you get a clearly good combination of great sound meets great comfort. For a large over-ear headphone, sound isolation could be better. Nonetheless, its overall quality (design, build, and audio performance), it is worth it for its price.
